Why consider encapsulated o-ring
Encapsulated O-rings are recommended which they are chemically resistant and used to prevent the corrosive fluids or gasses from getting through to the elastomer in an application.
Encapusulated O-rings have excellent resistance to almost all types of media. They worked in a wide temperature range and made from FDA approved materials to suit food and drugs processing applications.
Types of encapsulated O-rings
Two types of cores are available, which enables them to be used in different application.
1. Solid Core
These are standard which usually made of either a silicone energiser ore or a core made from Viton.
Viton cores have excellent elasticity.
Sillicode has similar benefit but because of softer core, it has higher standard of heat resistance. Therefore it is recommended to use in lower temperature application.
2. Hollow Core
For fragile applications where extreme elasticity is required, it is best to use Viton and silicone cores.
Although they may come with a compromise in terms of compression set and recovery.
1. PFA Outer Jackets
Excellent at resisting a range of corrosive chemicals.
Compression set is low, and their operating temperatures range from -60°C to +260°
Compared to FEP, they have higher mechanical strength and improved resistance to cracking and stress.
2. FEP Outer Jackets
Compared to PFA, slightly weaker mechanically.
Narrower operating temperature range, of -60°C up to +205°
Their service life is slightly shorter, but they are generally lower cost.
PTFE Encapsulated O-Rings ( Teflon O-Rings )
The PTFE O-Rings for use in applications which require a chemically resistant and non-compressible material. PTFE is the chemically inert of the O-ring materials.

Teflon Encapsulated Silicone O-Ring
They are generally manufactured from Viton or Silicone core and are coated in a thin moulded layer of Teflon FEP or PFA.
Teflon encapsulated O-Rings are primarily used as a static seal (axial or radial).
